Genius for Apps – Apple’s iPhone app recommendations feature built into the App Store since the release of the iPhone OS 3.1 update – seems to be learning from my installed and purchased apps pretty well.  It offers up some decent app recommendations most of the time after a few months of being enabled.  It also still throws some real curveballs at me though.  Some WTF type suggestions that leave me laughing.  For instance …

The other night it offered me Implode as a suggested app, and told me the suggestion was based on Typewar.  Hmmm.  Typewar is a font guessing game.  It’s a non-action-packed typography fest, where you do your best to correctly identify fonts used.  A game for those who can spot the difference between Times New Roman and Garamond.  Implode, the recommended app, is about blowing stuff up.

Somehow Genius made the jump from looking for serif vs. san-serif to planting dynamite bundles and demolishing buildings.  So … I think Genius for Apps is mostly working OK, it just occasionally suffers a little brain fart and offers up bizarre suggestions, just to keep us on our toes
